Our story

Urban Mushrooms is YMCA Newcastle's newest social enterprise. With local youth unemployment in Newcastle varies between 20-25%, add to this a huge student population of over 50,000 people and it leads to a very competitive environment for young job seekers. Our social enterprise offers volunteering and apprenticeships opportunities with access to training and education for young people. We use used coffee grounds to grow the mushrooms on as they are still full of nutrition that mushrooms love, helping reduce the 500,000 tonnes of coffee grounds making it to landfill every year. On top of this our urban farm is situated in the heart of Newcastle bringing new life to old derelict buildings.
